Miracle Question in Practice: Facilitating Change through Future-Focused Dialogue

Virtual
Training date and time

In this training, participants will learn about the Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) technique of the Miracle question. The Miracle Question is a core SFT intervention that helps clients clarify goals, increase hope and identify concrete steps toward meaningful change. Through interactive discussion, role play practice and case vignettes, participants will learn to deliver the Miracle Question in a developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive way to guide clients in imagining and constructing a future without their presenting problems or concerns. Participants will learn about the power of the Miracle Question in helping clients foster hope, identify goals, create change and uncover existing skills, strengths and resources that will enhance their resilience and sense of self-efficacy.

Participants will learn the key components of the technique including the core script (overnight miracle scenario) and follow-up questions (“What else?”) to elicit specific indicators of improvement. Participants will also learn creative ways of goal setting and help clients identify small, achievable steps toward change. By strengthening their ability to facilitate future-oriented conversations, clinicians will be better equipped to foster client motivation, increase self-efficacy and promote meaningful, sustainable progress across a variety of settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the meaning, importance and purpose of the Miracle Question technique in Solution-Focused Therapy.
  • Demonstrate how to introduce and ask the Miracle Question in a clear, developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Identify opportunities to adapt the Miracle Question for different populations, settings, phases of treatment and client needs.
