Training Description: During this 1-hour training, Addressing Secondary Trauma & Compassion Fatigue, participants will explore the impact of work-related trauma. Participants will be given the opportunity to consider how exposure to trauma in the workplace has affected them and how they have coped. Emphasis will be placed on identifying helpful coping strategies using group discussion and case reviews.

Training Description: This training provides an overview of brain injury and a screening tool that BH Clinicians can utilize in their work. The connection between brain injury and behavioral health is becoming more recognized and pertinent in our everyday work. This training looks at the bi-directional relationship between brain injury and behavioral health, high-risk populations, and the importance of screening for brain injury in behavioral health settings. Understand how to identify potential exposures to brain injury and how it can support someone’s ongoing engagement in behavioral health treatments and services.

Training Description: People presenting for evaluation of a psychiatric crisis are at risk for significant medical issues that can arise related to their underlying psychiatric condition, absence of appropriate medical care before presentation, side effects of psychiatric treatment, as the direct result of substances that may have been ingested or occur independently of their psychiatric condition. Mental health clinicians need to be familiar with some common presentations and the high-risk medical conditions in this population. At times, the features of an individual’s psychiatric presentation may interfere with their ability to clearly state medical symptoms, or they may be dismissed by providers who mistakenly interpret their symptoms as part of a psychiatric syndrome.

Training Description: Our population is aging. By 2060, there will be approximately 90 million people living in the United States over the age of 65 and people of color will comprise close to half of these older adults. Regardless of the setting, most mental health providers will be treating older adults. This series of older adults is broken into 3 parts: Cognitive health and resilience, cognitive impairment and safety, and common psychiatric issues in older adults. We will discuss healthy aging and cognitive resilience strategies, including tips for aging well. We will then discuss cognitive impairment and dementia including initial evaluation, screening, and common safety issues. Lastly, we will discuss some common psychiatric disorders in older adults.

Training Description: The clinical assessment is the first meeting with the client and clinician to establish care. This can be a complex meeting with many priorities, including creating a welcoming, safe environment, attending to confidentiality and the limits of this, recognizing ways to attend to the individual needs of the client in a culturally competent, trauma-informed manner, assessing for safety and risk, and evaluating their presentation and symptomatology to determine an initial working diagnosis and treatment plan. In this training we will present evidence-based methods of conducting the clinical assessment and best practices for asking difficult questions and gathering information for the creation of an initial clinical formulation and treatment plan.

Training Description: This 1.5 hour online course will discuss the epidemiology of eating disorders (EDO), including: prevalence and risk factors; diagnostic criteria and sub-types of EDOs; specialized levels of care for EDO; evidence-based therapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatments for EDO; and information regarding prognosis, monitoring, and relapse/remission for patients across the lifespan with EDO.

Training Description: This 1-hour online training will review the prevalence, detection, diagnosis and management of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). More complicated mental health illnesses such as postpartum psychosis will also be discussed. This overview of perinatal mental health will be supported with clinical scenarios and pearls throughout the presentation.

Training Description: For teens and young adults experiencing psychotic symptoms, specialized early intervention provides the best hope for recovery. This training will be a self-guided, module-based introduction to psychosis which is intended to familiarize staff with psychosis and provide a framework for assessing and referring youth for specialty care. In this training, staff from the Massachusetts Psychosis Network for Early Treatment (MAPNET) and the Massachusetts Psychosis Access & Triage Hub (M-PATH) will discuss strategies to assess, communicate with, and support youth who are experiencing psychosis and their families. In addition, the training will share resources to connect with specialized consultation and treatment for psychosis in Massachusetts.

This short training does not meet the requirements for CE Credits.

Training Description: It is critical for all community behavioral health staff to be aware of suicide prevention protocols and intervention efforts as we recognize suicide as a leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide as a public health issue has led to a shared responsibility for all staff to best support and respond to clients in behavioral health settings. This course is designed for behavioral health clinicians and support staff to better engage, assess, and respond to suicide risk within behavioral health community agencies. The topic of suicide management is complex and mental health crises can vary greatly within an agency. This training resource will help clinicians and staff increase their understanding of a shared alertness approach using evidence-based methods of addressing crises using screening and safety planning. It is a shared responsibility to promote ongoing awareness and more effectively improve care for individuals at risk of suicide.

Training Description: This 1-hour training describes best practice guidelines for providing client care in a virtual setting. Telehealth has broken many barriers to care and has improved behavioral health access. We as clinicians can focus on the advances of this health care delivery if this is the best option for the client. We can work to establish relationships to improve client engagement and trust to better our clinical practice. As technology advances, we have a responsibility to remain current with state regulations and innovative ways to offer the best clinical care.

Training Description: This 1-hour training, Trauma-Informed Screening and Assessment is designed to provide tools for screening in a trauma-informed manner that will help the counselor and client develop a common understanding of the connection between their trauma and the issues they may be facing in the present. This approach will support a safe counselor-client relationship, provide effective services, and promote improved outcomes. In this training, we will examine trauma-informed techniques for collecting information about individuals and their families through the process of screening and assessment. Participants will learn about the principles of trauma-informed screening and assessment and will be given the opportunity to put these principles into practice.

Training Description: Children and adults with autism and those with Intellectual and developmental disabilities are at higher risk of having comorbid psychiatric disorders than individuals in the general population. Yet, many behavioral health providers feel ill equipped to care for these populations largely due to lack of training and exposure. Stigma can also affect the willingness of institutions and clinicians to provide psychiatric care to people with ASD and those with IDD at all levels of care. Access to inpatient care varies widely across institutions. There is a dearth of specialists and services to support those with ASD/IDD and comorbid psychiatric disorders. Most therapists trained in ASD/IDD or in mental health have little knowledge of or training in each other’s fields. In fact, most child psychiatry trainees see less than 5 outpatients and 10 inpatients with ASD/IDD per year during their 2 years of training. This limited clinical exposure and experience has had important implications regarding families having ready access to services manned by professionals equipped to meet the needs of people with ASD/IDD and comorbid psychiatric disorders.

Training Description: This 4-hour course will provide attendees with information on Child-Development and the Adolescent Brain including the basics of children’s brain architecture, how to support brain development, adolescent thinking and behavior, impacts of trauma, and how to use brain science when interacting with young people.

Training Description: The Motivational Interviewing approach has been researched extensively in diverse settings, including primary care, mental health, addictions, education, and facilities under the Department of Corrections. Continuously evolving MI strategies have necessitated ongoing education for all types of healthcare workers.

Training Description: Policy recommendations from The Governor Council to Address Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence state that Behavioral Health Helpline staff and the Community Based Behavioral Health Center staff receive core training on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). IPV is a significant public health threat that adversely impacts the health, social, emotional and cognitive development of adult survivors and their exposed children. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, more than 10 million adults experience domestic violence annually in the United States. This equates to approximately 1 incident of IPV occurring every 3 seconds. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that lifetime prevalence rates for children’s exposure to domestic violence hover in the area of 15.5 million; however, this figure is an estimation based on self-reported data and experts agree that the actual prevalence rate is much higher.

Training Description: The Mobile Crisis Intervention Core Training Series is 3-hours and comprised of three learning sessions. One session each on: understanding the crisis response, crisis de-escalation, and therapeutic crisis intervention. Understanding the crisis response provides a basic understanding of how the crisis is experienced in the brain and body and the crisis team’s overarching approach when responding to the crisis. Crisis de-escalation provides learners with an understanding of various strategies to help an individual move from a heightened state of arousal to a calmer state. 

Training Description: This 30 min training, Trauma-Informed Crisis Response and De-Escalation is designed to offer an understanding of trauma, its impact and how this may contribute to difficult encounters with our clients.  In this training, we will review some basic principles of what trauma is and how it effects the brain. More specifically, how the brain’s arousal system perceives danger or threat when addressing challenging encounters with program staff.  We will explore what and how a trauma related trigger may contribute to challenges in developing a safe and therapeutic relationship with your client.

Training Description: This 30-minute training provides guidance on how to effectively work with diverse Deaf populations using video scenarios of challenges in connecting appropriate interpreter services for individuals and the negative consequences that result. Building a foundational understanding of Deaf culture, working with interpreters and assessing individual preferences for communication are presented as best practices.

Training Description: This 1-hour training is designed to provide participants with information on the impacts of racial trauma, ways to promote equity in therapeutic environments, and how to support healing in treatment. This training begins with a brief introduction to trauma-informed care, trauma, and types of racial trauma. The training explores the impact of racial trauma and the presence of daily occurrences that fuel experiences of racial trauma. The training emphasizes that developing safety and addressing racial trauma is an ongoing practice that requires people to reflect on systems and how people interact with the people they serve each day. Through this, participants will explore ways to increase safety and equity within treatment leading to the promotion of healing.

Training Description: Module 1 will review the three phases of the migration journey, and the impact that the migration journey has on youth and families. It will also cover the four core stressors that are commonly experienced by refugee and immigrant youth and families when they arrive in the United States, as well as an assessment tool that can be used to determine appropriate interventions.

Training Description: This 1-hour training will provide participants with information on how to enhance cultural humility and allyship skills. This training begins with defining cultural humility, marginalization, allyship, and identifying common groups that are marginalized. The training moves to explore personal biases that people have and how this impacts cultural humility. The training provides exploration on self-reflection on how to enhance one’s ability to be an ally.

Training Description: This module will cover: foundational concepts and terminology related to gender identity, sexual orientation and sex development; how to mitigate the adverse impact of anti-LGBTQIA+ implicit bias; sensitive and effective communication with LGBTQIA+ people; collecting patient sexual orientation and gender identity information; and how to foster an inclusive and affirming mental health care environment for LGBTQIA+ people.

Training Description: In a recent analysis of America’s veteran population, it was found that the number of veterans (7% of all U.S. adults) and active-duty personnel (less than 1% of all U.S. adults) have dropped significantly over the last 50 years (Pew Research Center, 2021). As the likelihood of having exposure to military service in one’s personal life has decreased, standardized inclusion of military culture in academic curricula is limited. 

Training Description: This 45-minute module will provide an overview of health disparities and a framework for collaborating with individuals using cultural humility with specific health considerations for racial, ethnic and linguistic (REL) minorities, individuals with disabilities, Deaf people, and LGBTQIA+ people.

Training Description: This online training is 4 hours and is best for practitioners with a foundational understanding of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) including the theory and structure of practice in adherent CBT. This course will focus on the interventions used in CBT for symptoms of depression and will provide learners with an overview of the CBT model of Depression and general assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment strategies. Learners will be oriented to, observe demonstrations of, and practice specific cognitive and behavioral strategies traditionally used in the treatment of depression.

Training Description: This online training is 4 hours and will provide an overview of CBT model applied to the development and maintenance of anxiety and related symptoms. Participants will be oriented to, observe demonstrations of, and practice specific cognitive and behavioral strategies traditionally used in the treatment of anxiety.

Training Description: This online training is 4 hours and will include an Overview of the History, Development, and Rationale for DBT Skills Training including: Biosocial Theory of Borderline Personality Disorder, Trauma Responsive Elements of DBT, and Cross-Cultural Practice Considerations. Also, Review of Four Core Skills Modules Content including Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Training Description: This brief 30-minute training provides an introductory overview of Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing or MI is a method of interacting with individuals to facilitate health behavior change. MI is a shift away from telling people why they should change or how they should change. Instead, MI works to draw out from the person their ideas about why change would be beneficial and how it can be done in the context of that individual’s life.

Continuously evolving MI strategies have necessitated ongoing education for all types of healthcare workers.

Training Description: During this 30-minute module, representatives from the Department of Mental Health (DMH) will discuss eligibility, enrollment and collaboration opportunities with these agencies and the CBHCs.

Training Description: During this 45-minute module, a representative from the Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC) will discuss ways mandated reporters can recognize and report suspected neglect and abuse.

Training Description: During this 45-minute module, representatives from the Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA) will discuss eligibility, enrollment and collaboration opportunities with EOEA and the CBHCs.

Training Description: During this 30-minute module, the Deputy Commissioner from the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) will provide an overview of eligibility, enrollment, and ways to connect to MRC.

Training Description: In Massachusetts, certain professionals are designated as mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. As mandated reporters, these individuals have a legal obligation to report any suspected cases of child abuse to the relevant authorities. Taking mandated reporter training is the best way to ensure that you understand your duty and can report effectively.

Training Description: This 1-hour training, Developing Practical Skills in Providing Trauma Informed Care is designed to provide participants with practical experience in providing trauma-informed care through interactive activities and problem-focused case examples. This training provides participants with practical experience implementing interventions and techniques introduced in the Introduction to Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care module.

Training Description: Chapter 260 training covers the issue of domestic violence and sexual violence, including, but not limited to, the common physiological and psychological symptoms of domestic violence and sexual violence, the physiological and psychological effects of domestic violence and sexual violence on victims, including children who witness such abuse, the challenges of domestic violence and sexual violence victims who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, low-income, minority, immigrant or non-English speaking, availability of rape and sexual assault shelter and support services within the Commonwealth. The training also addresses the pathology of offenders including, but not limited to, identifying the system of abusive behaviors used to maintain control, the intentionality of the violence, the tendency to minimize abuse and blame the victim, and the risk to the victim created by joint counseling.

Training Description: This 1-hour online training, Introduction to Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care is designed to support individual and organizational efforts to provide trauma-informed care. In this training, we will discuss the experience of trauma and how it relates to mental health and overall well-being.  We will also discuss how trauma-informed strategies may be used to support recovery from traumatic experiences.

Training Description: This 2-hour training will cover an overview of the diagnoses of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in youth and the impact on the individual when they co-occur with substance use disorders. The information presented will include the influence of the disorders on the decision-making and behaviors of clients with these issues as well as current best practice interventions to include both behavioral as well as medication options.

This 1.5-hour online training provides a general overview of the concept of trauma and specific impacted domains of development. The training illustrates several areas of development, with specific examples on how trauma affects: Attachment, Behavioral Control, Biology, Cognitions, Dissociation, Emotional Regulation, and Sense of Self. Examples and case vignettes will be utilized to describe how trauma looks developmentally. Strategies to address trauma reactions will be provided. 

This 2.5 hour training will discuss how the changing drug supply and risk for overdose has changed for adolescents and young adults since the start of the opioid epidemic. Participants will learn about the unique considerations for providing care for youth at risk for overdose, including those with opioid use disorder. Evidence for initiation and ongoing treatment with pharmacologic treatment, including buprenorphine, will be provided and participants will review practical considerations for implementing opioid use disorder treatment for youth.

Training Description: Mobile Crisis Intervention – Working with Youth: Behavioral Health Fundamentals learning session provides a foundational base of knowledge for understating common behavioral health concerns experienced by youth in crisis, including anxiety, mood disorders, emerging psychosis, autism spectrum disorder and substance use. For each of these behavioral health concerns the learning session explores definition, prevalence, signs and symptoms, screening tools, strategies, and key considerations specific to race, gender identity, sexual orientation. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on youth mental health is also addressed.

Training Description: As a supervisor or director in a Community Service Agency (CSA) one of your responsibilities is to serve as a coach to staff facilitating Wraparound with families. The introduction to Coaching in Wraparound will prepare for the series by examining your own learning style and considering the learning styles of your team; reflecting on strength-based supervision; and reviewing the four components of Wraparound: Theory of Change, Four Phases, Ten Principles, and Family Partner and Care Coordinator Skill Sets. The subsequent modules will review three coaching tools and provide opportunity to practice using vignettes and resources developed specifically for CSA Wraparound coaches.

Training Description: Care Coordinators and Family Partners are an essential dyad and a key part of the care planning team for families in Wraparound. This module is an introduction to the unique relationship between care coordinators and family partners, similarities and differences, and includes practice problem-solving with scenarios.

Training Description: If you want to run effective Wraparound care plan team meetings from the start, then you need to thoroughly prepare each team member. Preparing for the First Care Plan Team Meeting is a two part training that will guide you through the preparation process for families and for other team members. Part 1 focuses on preparing the family and Part 2 focuses on preparing other members of the team.

Training Description: One of the most important and useful skills families can learn is safety planning. Developing a safety plan in collaboration with the youth and family that they feel committed to will help prepare the family to avoid bad outcomes and to manage their needs.
